About Child-Centered Play Therapy
Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is an evidence-based approach used to support children’s emotional, social, and behavioral development. Research over several decades has shown that CCPT can effectively help children improve self-regulation, reduce anxiety and behavior challenges, and build confidence and problem-solving skills.
At its core, CCPT is based on the idea that play is a child’s natural language. Instead of relying on conversation alone (which can be difficult for young children), therapists use play to understand how a child is feeling and experiencing the world. During sessions, the child leads the play while the therapist provides a safe, accepting, and structured environment. This helps children express emotions, process experiences, and develop healthier ways of coping.
In CCPT, the therapist does not direct or “fix” the child’s behavior in the moment. Instead, they build a strong, supportive relationship and reflect the child’s feelings and actions. Over time, this approach helps children:
Feel understood and emotionally safe
Improve self-control and decision-making
Develop confidence and independence
Work through stress, trauma, or life changes
For parents, this means CCPT supports your child’s growth from the inside out, helping them build the skills they need for long-term emotional well-being—not just short-term behavior change.
